Young people in flats
Growing up in foster care, away from their biological families, is a time of challenges and change for many young adults. Upon reaching adulthood and leaving care facilities, these individuals face the challenge of finding a stable place to live and support in the process of independent living. In response to these needs, the Gdańsk Foundation for Social Innovation (GFIS) runs a training housing programme called ‘Zamieszkaj u siebie’ (Live on Your Own).
This programme not only provides young adults with safe housing at the start of their lives, but also offers comprehensive support in the process of becoming independent. GFIS manages 12 flats provided by the Municipality of Gdańsk, where young adults can live on preferential financial terms. With individual support, each resident develops a personal development plan tailored to their needs and plans. The programme includes housing training, developing skills in accessing legal and health care, and psychological and practical support, responding to the individual needs of each person. At the same time, residents are supported in activities aimed at long-term independent living, through obtaining housing from municipal resources, renting/purchasing a flat or regularising their legal situation.

The flats in the ‘Live at Home’ programme are located in municipal housing scattered across various locations in the city of Gdańsk. This enables residents to undergo housing training rooted in the community, in natural neighbourhood conditions.
